Are Anime and Tokusatsu just for kids?

I’m 18 , and this article is inspired by a cousin of mine, so here’s the story , my cousin came in and he sleep over for some days, and then, when i watch Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger The Movie , He commented like : “What the F*** ? you still watch kid shows? You’re suck! “, and rather than debatingm i decided to put his on my blog.
First thing First, Anime is just anything else in entertainment, for example : GAME.

Right, a game is neither only for adults nor only for kids, Games can be categorized by rating (like T is for TEEN , M is for Mature etc.), let’s say Grand Theft Auto is rated M, that means it contains things that a kid shouldn’t see, why we need to see the rating? That’s because sometimes parents worried about things that could affect child’s mentality, maybe if the kid watch the violence, gore, and sex, they will do something wrong, or they will get phobia, there’s a lot of things could happen.
But, in a country like Indonesia, or another developing country, there is low awareness about ratings, people just tend to buy and enjoy the movie regardless of the content, and another factor is piracy, prated movies oftenly unrated and uncensored, thus making us harder to categorize is it for adult or kid.

Back to the main topic, Anime is for everyone, but we must know which one for kids and which one for teens and which one for adults, for example, series like GANTZ, or PARADISE KISS are containing adult material like sexual orientation, social problems and more, while Kids better watch simple and fun anime like DORAEMON or HAMTARO.
If you’re a parent or concerned about your kid watching porn in tokusatsu, i had a case with a mom, so this mom told me that her boy asked her to buy a Power Ranger DVD, this mom went to a pirated CD merchant and bought a CD tittled Power Ranger, she doesn’t care about the content, and when her boy watch it , he told her that he saw the pink ranger opened her clothes , making her topless. I Can’t name the movie because as i know, there’s a lot of movies with that thing , there are many super sentai imitations that produced as adult film, or in some cases porn movie.


I must admit that while Anime has branched into many demographics, ot of the tokusatsu show, the Super Sentai series are going into “kiddy” state, let’s say Ressha Sentai ToQger, the design, the dialogue, the story is became more and more childish than Shinkenger or Gokaiger, but that don’t mean that Tokusatsu is for kids, some of Super Sentai episodes has mature topics, don’t forget another Tokusatsu Show : Kamen Rider, beginning with Ryuuki ‘till now, the series kept the serious tone for most shows, but children can still enjoy fun side of riders like in Wizard, Den-O and Fourze.


Genre too couldn’t determine that Anime is only for kids, for example in my favourite genre : Mecha.

Gundam (above) had mature contents while Voltron (below) is kid friendly

For kids, mecha like Voltron could be entertaining, it’s fun, had good action scenes, and the story is lighthearted, but Mecha genre also had mature shows like Gundam and Macross series that contained Political conflicts, life problems, and morality issues, i don’t say kid shows are bad, in fact i enjoywatching voltron but as this article purposed, i want to show that Anime is not just for kids, adults can enjoy it too.
